The plastic manufacturers’ association India or AIPMA has organized a new webinar successfully on the 17th of July, 2020. This brought together manufacturers and industry bodies/companies together with plastic raw material suppliers for gathering knowledge on how to make plastic packaging and labels more cost-effective and sustainable. The webinar was hosted in collaboration with Shakti Plastic Industries and Polyart Synthetic Paper. The session was moderated by leading industry expert Ajnain Shahidi from the SIES School of Packaging. Panelists at the session include Ritika Gadoya from Shakti Plastic Industries, Pierre Rougeaux from Polyart Synthetic Paper and Ruchit Vora and Louis Rouhand from Arjobex. The webinar emphasized upon the legal aspects of the industry in terms of recycling and reuse along with challenges encountered owing to recycling needs for plastic containers.
It also talked about lowering carbon footprint in terms of labeling technologies/methodologies and how recycling can be more convenient and cost-effective with IMPL (in-mold labeling) unibody HDPE technology. The session talked about various intricacies linked to the Indian plastics industry and packaging requirements via multiple viewpoints and perceptions of the industry. This covered the working process of plastic recycling and the methods of improving acceptance of recycled plastic as well. It also talked about the impact of labels on recyclability of bottles and overall carbon footprint from the standpoint of packaging. The session also touched upon the blow molding technologies of IMPL and how they are a good fit for the circular economy system if a brand owner looks to utilize the same. Polyart is a leading synthetic paper brand which is 50 years old and it is under the ownership of Arjobex, the French brand. HDPE film is manufactured by the company at its production units spanning the United Kingdom (UK), United States of America (USA) and France. Shakti Plastics is a well-known polymer waste recycler in India and is based in Mumbai. The webinar discussed the key environmental issues that are present in the plastics industry in contemporary times while also talking about whether it has been proven that HDPE pellet production from recycled plastics leads to lower greenhouse gas emissions in comparison to virgin HDPE pellets. Unibody IML based labeling was discussed along with its propensity towards getting recycled pellets of superior quality and whether this would help in improvement of the whole process of recycling while tackling micro-plastic pollution. The lowering of weights for blown bottles and reducing the pellet numbers via IML was also discussed likewise. The transition procedure was also covered at the webinar.
